ATLANTA — In this video, Steven S. Sharfstein, MD, president and CEO of Sheppard Pratt Health System, discusses the role of private funding in psychiatric care and how it may deter individuals from seeking mental health treatment.
“These days most psychiatrists do not take private insurance,” Sharfstein told Healio.com/Psychiatry. “It is too much of a hassle and reimbursements are too low. This has created a public health problem as many individuals want to access psychiatric care using their insurance and are unable to.”
This issue needs to be addressed in health care reform, according to Sharfstein.
