Born in Scarsdale, New York, Aranda resided in Portland, Oregon since the 1970s, and died there in 2010. She was a self-taught artist who lived with mental illness for most of her life. Art was introduced to her as a component of treatment, and had always been of great help to her in times of stress. Her prolific artwork was filled with insight, humor, and stories of her life. Aranda had a bachelor's degree in philosophy and a master's degree in social psychology, and was extremely articulate, interested in politics, and showed great concern for others.
