Katherine Hicks Tsonas was born in East Lansing, Michigan in 1947 and later moved to Sarasota, Florida with her family. From an early age, she was an avid lover of nature and art. At age 15, Katherine was introduced to batik. Her educational training in Florida included fine art at the University of South Florida and commercial art at the Ringling School of Art. In addition to batik, one of Katherine's passions was pastel portraiture. Her award-winning batiks have been exhibited extensively and in numerous one-woman shows. Katherine lived in Bryson City, North Carolina, where she had an art studio and gallery.
