Janice Atkins was born and raised in Belmont and San Carlos, California, and was diagnosed with schizophrenia when she was in high school. At age 18, she moved to Kansas City where she had her first breakdown at age 27 and, at the same time, discovered an interest and talent in art. In 1981, Janice received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts from the University of Missouri. Her art has been exhibited in competitions and one-woman shows, and seven of her original paintings are in the permanent collection in the Spencer Museum of Art in Lawrence, Kansas.
