Ever since he was a child growing up in the Buffalo, New York area, Jonathan has had a natural inclination to draw, and in high school he began to seriously develop his artistic talents. After his 1982 graduation from the University of Buffalo with a BFA in communications design, he had a short-lived tenure as a designer. In 2007, he returned to school and earned a BFA in studio art, painting, and drawing from the Art Institute of Chicago. Jonathan considers himself a regionalist painter, similar in philosophy to Thomas Hart Benton, Grant Wood, and Edward Hopper, who produced works about their lives and the regions where they lived. Jonathan refuses to attach himself to any particular movement and instead has pushed his work into an individualistic pursuit.
