To the Editor:
I am a primary-care pediatrician practicing in Rochester, NY. I just finished reading the February 2007 issue on obesity. As are many of my colleagues, I am faced daily with the epidemic problem of childhood obesity and share in the frustration as to how to affect positively on my patients. I wanted to inform you that my partner, Rahul Sengupta, MD, and I have developed a comprehensive obesity intervention program in our community.
We created the Rochester School of Fitness, which has been in operation since November 2006. After extensive review of the medical literature, we developed a program that we believe has the key elements for success. We readily acknowledge the ineffectiveness of achieving successful behavior modification in the office setting. We therefore created a 12- week "immersion program" for our patients, which incorporates physical fitness classes and dietary instruction. Enrollees spend 3 hours each week for 12 weeks with our fitness trainer and registered dietician. In addition, and we believe most significant, is that parents are participating right alongside their children in both fitness and nutrition class. We are convinced that the combination of fitness and nutrition and parent and child is the winning combination for affecting the necessary lifestyle changes to overcome childhood obesity.
We are young, but we have already had excellent feedback from participants in the program. We have also been very encouraged by the changes in body measurements, waist circumference, weight, and body mass index.
