In a few days the 19th EFORT Congress will take place in Barcelona. The scientific and educational program has been finalized for several months and another exciting meeting awaits us.

The main theme of the congress is “Innovation and new technologies.” This theme was selected by the scientific board of EFORT to give participating orthopaedic surgeons their best-ever opportunity to learn, at one meeting over 3 days, about several aspects of innovation and new technology within the advancing profession of medicine. In all, 23 symposia, instructional lectures and complex case discussions have been organized around the main congress theme with a focus on new diagnostic technologies, advances in biomaterial and implant technologies, new tissue regeneration techniques and the latest news in robotic and computer-assisted surgery and, especially, 3-D printing in orthopaedics and traumatology.

Honorary lectures

We will again have two distinguished orthopaedic surgeons each give an honorary lecture. Prof. Reinhard Graf from Austria will lecture on Thursday, May 31 about “Hip sonography in babies: Prevention is better than operation.” Prof. Philippe Hernigou from France will lecture on Friday, June 1 about “Cell therapy in orthopaedic surgery: 30 years of experience.” Please plan your schedule so you can listen to both speakers.

In total, 180 educational sessions will be held during the 3 congress days. Moreover, a panel of expert scientific advisors selected 576 free papers, 63 clinical cases and 1,164 posters to be presented at the meeting from the 3,217 submitted abstracts.

In Barcelona, once again, a full-day Advanced Total Hip and Knee Replacement course has been planned with assistance from the European Hip Society, European Knee Association and European Knee Society. European lower-limb joint replacement experts will discuss complex primary total hip replacement, revision total hip and knee replacement, stability in difficult primary total knee replacement and the newest innovations in hip and knee replacement. This is an outstanding program that will fulfill the need for knowledge among surgeons who regularly perform THR or TKR.

Many trauma offerings

Trauma treatment is a huge burden for orthopaedic surgeons across Europe and, as always, about 50% of all the sessions at the EFORT Congress deal with trauma. This year’s congress will have specific focus on shoulder and proximal humerus fractures, and strategies to treat spine trauma, as well as soft-tissue lesions.

A great tradition at these congresses is that EFORT offers the larger European orthopaedic specialty societies the opportunity to organize and hold their own educational sessions during the congress days. Therefore, each day of the 2018 Congress you may select a specialty society educational session of interest to attend. The content of each of these sessions can be found at the EFORT website.

Finally, the 2018 Comprehensive Review Course, which has been a fixed part of the congress program each year, will be held on Wednesday, May 31 in the Munich session room. In addition, anyone who attends this course has the opportunity during the lunch break from 12:45 to 14:15 to select from several interesting sessions organized by the orthopaedic industry.

As the in-coming president of the EFORT board, I hereby invite you to attend and connect with your colleagues at the 19th EFORT Congress in Barcelona. I look forward to seeing you there for another memorable congress.
