Anatomic reinsertion seen as preferred surgical method of distal biceps tears

In the surgical treatment of distal biceps tendon tears, investigators of this study found surgeons preferred anatomic reinsertion to the radial tuberosity.

Researchers reviewed demographic and surgical data, and postoperative complications among 1,443 patients who underwent surgical intervention for distal biceps tendon tears from 2007 to 2011.

Results showed 95% of surgeons preferred reinsertion to the radial tuberosity vs. 5% of surgeons who preferred tenodesis to the brachialis. Overall, researchers found 5.4% of patients underwent revision surgery for tendon re-rupture.

According to results, the incidence of revision surgery for re-rupture was 5.1% for acute distal biceps tears and 7% for chronic distal biceps tears. Researchers noted a postoperative infection rate of 1.1% and a peripheral nerve injury rate of 0.6%. – by Casey Tingle
