Study: Culture-negative, culture-positive infections should receive similar treatment

Recently published results showed patients with culture-negative infections should be treated in a similar manner to patients with culture-positive infections.

Researchers analyzed treatment failure due to unsuccessful eradication of infection and time to union in 391 patients aged 16 years or older who underwent irrigation and debridement for surgical site infection after fracture fixation.

Results showed a 9% incidence of culture-negative infection. Researchers noted treatment failure occurred in one-third of patients with either culture-negative or culture-positive infections. Patients with either culture-negative or culture-positive infections also had no significant difference with regard to time to union, according to results.

Subsequent reconstructive procedures were required in more than one-third of patients, results showed, and amputation was required in 5% of patients in both groups to control infection. Researchers found no difference in the use of antibiotics before intervention and cultures between the groups. – by Casey Tingle
