Similar results seen in preassembled and modular acetabular components after THA

In a comparison of ceramic-on-ceramic preassembled acetabular components and modular acetabular components, no significant differences were found in mean postoperative radiographic or functional outcomes or complications, according to study results.

Researchers analyzed 83 patients who underwent ceramic-on-ceramic total hip arthroplasty (THA) between June 2010 and June 2012 and classified 22 patients with a 48-mm or 50-mm diameter cup as the preassembled acetabular component group and 61 patients who needed a 52-mm to 62-mm diameter cup as the modular acetabular component group.

According to an independent sample t-test, the researchers found no significant differences in mean postoperative Harris Hip Scores, WOMAC score, acetabular component inclination or anteversion between the two groups.

The only significantly different factor between the two groups was gender, according to the researchers.

Fisher’s exact test indicated half of the women had smaller acetabular diameters, accommodating a cup size of only 48 mm to 50 mm. However, both groups experienced similar component-specific complications, according to the researchers. – by Casey Tingle
