DALLAS — Gerard “Jerry” A. Engh, MD, received the 2018 American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons Humanitarian Award at the organization’s annual meeting, here.

Engh, of Alexandria, Virginia, was recognized for his humanitarian work with Operation Walk Virginia through the award presented to him by Lawrence D. Dorr, MD, who founded Operation Walk in 1996.

“He really deserves it,” Dorr said when he presented Engh with the award. “He was one of the first people who bought into Operation Walk and formed a group and went on trips and became a real loyal supporter of that organization. But it’s not just that. He’s been good for orthopedics.”

Engh accepted the award to a standing ovation.

“I’d like to see two things happen over the next 2 years. First, I’d like to see – there’s currently 14 Operation Walk programs in North America. I’d like to see that grow to 28 programs in the next 2 years. I’d like to see AAHKS become a co-sponsor of all those programs. You know if you think about it, if we do those things, Operation Walk can become to orthopedic surgeons as Operation Smile has become the humanitarian organization to maxillofacial surgeons. So let’s get together and make it happen,” Engh said.
