THA restored hip biomechanics in patients with developmental dysplasia

Patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip experienced restoration of normal hip biomechanics when functional hip symmetry and cup superior displacement was within 12 mm after unilateral total hip arthroplasty, according to results.

Researchers measured levels of superior displacement of the acetabular cup and leg length discrepancy among 16 patients who underwent unilateral total hip arthroplasty (THA) and 15 patients who underwent bilateral cementless THA due to developmental dysplasia of the hip. Researchers also performed a 3-D gait analysis at least 1 year postoperatively. Patients who underwent THA were compared with 10 healthy participants.

Results showed significantly lower range of motion, particularly sagittal and frontal hip joint range of motion, among patients who underwent unilateral and bilateral THA vs. healthy participants. Compared with the bilateral THA group, researchers noted patients in the unilateral THA group had greater sagittal hip range of motion. While researchers did not observe a significant influence of high acetabular cup position on hip joint kinematics in unilateral subgroups, results showed high acetabular cup position had a significant influence on hip joint kinematics in the bilateral subgroups. – by Casey Tingle
