Recurrent shoulder dislocation prevented with combination Bankart repair and Bristow procedure

Although investigators of this study found a combination of Bankart repair and Bristow procedure prevented recurrent shoulder dislocation in rugby players, some patients complained of insufficiency in quality of their play when performing specific movements.

Researchers reviewed 40 shoulders in 38 rugby players who underwent Bankart repair followed by a Bristow procedure with preservation of the repaired capsular ligaments for traumatic anterior instability of the shoulder. Preoperatively and postoperatively, patients described common rugby maneuvers as “no problem,” “insufficient” or “impossible.”

At a mean follow-up of 30.5 months, researchers found no recurrent dislocations among patients. Following surgery, the mean Rowe score improved significantly from 65 to 97.5, according to study results.

Preoperatively, tackling ability was defined as insufficient for 23 shoulders and impossible for 17 shoulders. Postoperatively, 36 shoulders were reported as having no problem with tackling and four shoulders had insufficient ability. Researchers found similar results for hand-off, jackal and saving maneuvers, with no patients reporting any of the motions as impossible postoperatively. – by Casey Tingle
