Optometry Giving Sight has helped organize a global campaign that brings together leading optical companies to raise money and awareness through the World Sight Day Challenge.
The challenge is coordinated by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness as part of the Vision 2020 Global Initiative and is held annually on the second Thursday of October, according to a press release from Optometry Giving Sight.
“It’s amazing to see the effort and passion from the leadership and employees behind these companies,” Juan Carlos Aragon, MD, chairman of Optometry Giving Sight, said in the release. “Without them, our work wouldn’t be possible.”
Companies participating in the coalition include ABB Optical Group, Alcon Foundation, Bausch + Lomb, CooperVision, EyePromise, Essilor of America, Vision Source, VSP Global and Zeiss Vision USA.
The coalition members hope to continue the work they did in 2017, which consisted of providing eye care to marginalized groups and funding optometry schools in 24 economically struggling countries, according to the release.
This year, donations can help provide glasses for children, clinical equipment kits for outreach services and clinical staff for eye examinations. They can also aid with teacher training, school eye health screenings and in the purchase of equipment for clinical eye health examination rooms.
The World Sight Day Challenge runs throughout October and November this year and is currently accepting donations. For more information visit: www.givingsight.org.
