ABB Optical reports gains in daily disposable contacts in 2017

Daily disposable contact lenses led the category for dollar growth and market share nationwide in 2017, according to data from ABB Optical Group.

The 2-week lens modality declined, according to the organization’s 2017 year-in-review insights.

Daily disposable growth was up nearly 19%, ending the year with a market share of 44.6%.

The 2-week modality was down 6.8% in sales, making up 21.4% of the market share, while monthlies were up 3.8% and accounted for 33.5% market share, according to ABB’s press release.

Dollar growth of toric lenses increased nearly 10%, and multifocals were up 14%.

Bausch + Lomb and Alcon led all manufacturers in sales growth, with 10% and 9%, respectively, with Alcon leading the market in share gains for the year, according to ABB Optical.

Three products garnered the greatest year-over-year share point gain: 1-Day Oasys (Johnson & Johnson Vision Care), Dailies Total 1 Multifocal (Alcon) and 1-Day Oasys for Astigmatism (J&J).

ABB Optical also reported a 7.2% organic contact lens growth from practices that have chosen to partner with the company.
