Optical Polymer Research collaborates with optometry school on antimicrobial lens materials

Optical Polymer Research Inc. announced a collaboration with researchers from Western University of Health Sciences College of Optometry to develop a new generation of antimicrobial contact lens materials.

The lens materials are a composite structure combining Optical Polymer Research Inc.’s (OPRI’s) Aquaperm SiOH next-generation silicone hydrogel material with an assortment of nanoparticles, according to an announcement from OPRI.

In previous research, the nanoparticles demonstrated potent antimicrobial properties in addition to being biocompatible with the human corneal tissue, according to OPRI.

“The findings of this project may lead to the development of an entire new generation of contact lenses that possess a broad spectrum of antimicrobial properties and, therefore, have a wide range of prophylactic and therapeutic uses,” OPRI said in the announcement.
