Nikon, Verily partner to diagnose diabetic retinopathy sooner

Nikon Corp. and its subsidiary Optos Plc announced an alliance with Verily Life Science LLC in the field of machine learning-enabled retinal imaging, according to a press release.

The companies will collaborate on creating technology and solutions for enhanced screening of diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema by diabetes-treating physicians and others to assist in efficient referral of patients to eye care specialists. They also aim to provide these specialists with assisted reading programs for easier disease diagnosis.

Through an exclusive collaboration in numerous geographies, Nikon and Verily will codevelop solutions for the earlier detection of diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema. By combining Nikon’s optical engineering, precision manufacturing, ultra-widefield technology and strong commercial presence among eye care specialists with Verily’s machine learning technology, the alliance will work to provide innovative medical solutions for physicians and patients.
