ATLANTA – Alcon took part in nearly 650 medical missions, facilitated 47,000 cataract surgeries and served more than 480,000 patients around the world, Rick Weisbarth, OD, vice president of professional affairs, U.S. Vision Care, Alcon, said at a company-sponsored press conference held at SECO.
The total market value of the donated products and equipment was nearly $73 million, he said.
“Also, there was an additional $5.4 million cash donation through the Alcon Foundation partners for eye exams and dispensing spectacles to those who cannot afford it,” Weisbarth said.
“We also continue to partner with Think About Your Eyes. This is something we are extremely proud of; we’ve donated $6 million since 2014, and this year, we’ve committed to provide up to $2 million,” he continued.
Alcon will donate $5 to TAYE for every annual Alcon daily or monthly contact lenses supply sold, he explained.
“We are trying to tie good patient habits with giving back ... we know that patients who purchase an annual supply of contact lenses are more complaint,” Weisbarth added. “They replace their lenses more often. So, we are trying to tie that together ... thinking about the importance of proper eye care and developing good habits.”
When practitioners come to Alcon’s Fort Worth headquarters, they are encouraged to get involved with TAYE, he said.
“The reason we are so active in promoting this is that it takes a lot of effort and money to make it work. We truly believe that by partnering together better things will come,” Weisbarth said. – by Abigail Sutton
