Repeated PPV effective for persistent macular holes

Repeated pars plana vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane peeling and gas tamponade demonstrated effectiveness as a treatment for persistent macular holes, according to a study.

The retrospective study included 29 eyes of 29 patients treated for persistent macular hole who had at least 4 months of follow-up.

The authors collected demographic information; ocular history; visual acuity and IOP before the first and second PPVs; macular hole diameter before and after the surgeries, as well as during follow-up; interoperative time; details of the surgeries; and any reports of complications.

Closure of macular hole was achieved in 20 patients (68.9%), and 18 patients (62%) gained more than two lines of vision after the second surgery.

Improvement in final visual acuity was significantly correlated with smaller macular hole diameter (P = .005) and shorter time between the surgeries (P = .029), the authors said.
