Collagen copolymer toric phakic IOL provides stable visual, refractive outcomes

The use of a collagen copolymer toric phakic IOL provided stable visual outcomes for the correction of high and low levels of astigmatism, according to a study.

The prospective case series included 35 eyes of 20 patients with corrected distance visual acuity of at least 20/40, stable refraction and a clear central cornea. All patients had a complete ophthalmic examination prior to implantation with the V4b toric Visian ICL phakic IOL (STAAR Surgical). The researchers then evaluated uncorrected distance visual acuity, CDVA, refraction, toric phakic IOL vault and adverse effects during the subsequent 12 months.

Preoperative mean sphere was −5.46 D and mean cylinder was −3.14 D. At 12-month follow-up, mean sphere was −0.04 D, with 97% of eyes found to be within ±0.50 D of the target; mean cylinder at follow-up was −0.29 D.

With regard to astigmatism, 80% of eyes were within ±0.25 D of both J0 and J45, according to the researchers.

No eyes lost lines of CDVA; however, 43% gained one or more lines. Additionally, more than half of eyes included in the study had an uncorrected distance visual acuity of 20/20 at 12 months.

There were no reported intraoperative complications that required further examination, according to the researchers. Furthermore, the safety index at 12 months was 1.08, which remained stable from both the 3- and 6-month follow-up points.
