Premature birth linked with double rings in infants

Low birth weight and gestational age were found to influence the form of the optic disc in infants, according to a study.

In the retrospective trial, widefield fundus images of 111 optic discs in 61 premature infants were assessed using the RetCam Eye Imaging System (Clarity Medical Systems).

Mean gestational age was 28.3 weeks, and mean birth weight was 1,135 grams.

All but one of the optic discs had a vertical-oval form. The negative correlation between the form of the optic disc and birth weight and gestational age was significant, according to the authors (P = .003, P = .03, respectively).

The mean vertical diameter/horizontal diameter ratio was 1.28.

Visible disc cupping was found in 89% of eyes, and a double ring was found in 75%.

Further investigation of the individual courses and time points of optic disc development in the first years of life is warranted, the authors said.
