Dedicated to improving professional nursing practice through the development of knowledge of the cultural diversity prevalent in society, the American Nurses' Association Council on Cultural Diversity in Nursing Practice has prepared a statement titled Cultural Diversity in the Nursing Curriculum: A Guide for Implementation. This small booklet should be required reading for all nursing faculty. The nursing curriculum must fulfill the profession's obligation to prepare competent practitioners who will provide safe and effective care to all consumers of nursing's care, including those from diverse and multicultural populations.
The strategies for developing the philosophy and goals of the curriculum include these two steps:
1. Examination of the school's existing philosophy to determine if it reflects a commitment to providing safe, effective care for clients from diverse and multicultural populations.
2. Developing a philosophy consistent with the concepts relevant to providing safe, effective delivery of health care to clients from diverse and multicultural populations throughout the life cycle.
To help faculty reach these goals the curriculum should include values clarification, cultural awareness, and human relations. The approaches are nonprescriptive, and suggest content inclusion of such important factors as cultural belief systems, values, customs and habits, cultural change, biculturalism, and cultural perceptions to be included in the curriculum pattern the faculty has selected.
