Abstract

© 3M

The recently launched 3M Tegaderm Matrix Dressing with PHI technology is the first wound dressing in a platform of products from 3M that uses PHI technology, which consists of a unique blend of cations found naturally in the body, including potassium, zinc, calcium, and rubidium. Such technology responds to body temperature and promotes a natural moisture balance to help chronic wounds progress toward healing.

The dressing is indicated for use with chronic, noninfected wounds, including diabetic ulcers, pressure ulcers (stages II to IV), and venous stasis ulcers and has demonstrated favorable results on hard-to-heal wounds. Its unique formulation creates a favorable, moist wound environment that does not harm patients’ skin, affect tissue integrity, or cause maceration. The dressing’s simple design allows patients to easily apply and remove the dressing once out of the wound clinic, helping to increase patient adherence. Maddak LLC’s newest addition to its line of aids for daily living—the Combination Dressing Stick and Shoehorn—is a multipurpose tool that does more than what the name implies. The dressing stick includes special features, such as an extra-large angled hook designed to hold and pull clothing better than traditional dressing aids. In addition, the tool has two pushers, one small and flat edged and another large and curved, for removing clothing and shoes. The shoehorn end features a notch that can be used to remove shoes and socks.

The 24-inch long device, which can also be used for pushing and pulling drawers, doors, and other items; retrieving clothes from beds, chairs, floors, and closets; and accessing wall switches, is ideal for individuals with use of only one arm, limited range or motion, or arthritis. The Combination Dressing Stick and Shoehorn is $9.95 and can be ordered from http://www.maddak.com.

A new product from ConvaTec aims to offer clinicians and ostomy patients a simple and gentle solu-abdominal pain in the days and weeks following surgery. The SUR-FIT Natura® Low-Pressure Adaptor is a flexible ring that goes between the skin barrier and pouch to create added finger space, allowing the user to attach the pouch without contact with the abdomen. The result is that the fingers absorb the pressure required to snap the pouch to the skin barrier because the connection takes place away from the skin.

Once tenderness subsides, the adaptor may be removed, thus creating a lower profile (closer to the body) system composed of the skin barrier and pouch only. The adaptor will work with any ConvaTec Moldable Technology skin barrier in flat and convex shapes. The ring, or flange, size of the adaptor must match the ring or flange size of the skin barrier.
