We awaken in our huge bed with my right arm over my right ear, face down, legs crossed, and her position is identical. She can always find my glasses, and I can point to the dish she’ll order on an eight-page menu. We both know which loud guest from Clemson will be off the next party list.

A fresh mate or two each spring, like chimps or bonobos? New spouses are unfocused, allowing oboe practice, all-male fishing trips, and lengthy ruminations after the reading of morning editorials.

Yesterday, she coyly asked for my Unified Field Theory, and I told her it may yet reveal itself. “So, this is one of those days? Besides, who else could stand 40 with you?” She whispered, “It’s 41.”…
