Debra L. Schutte, MSN, RN, a Doctoral Student at The University of Iowa College of Nursing, was selected as the first recipient of the Edna Stilweíl Writing Award for her article, "Genetic Testing in Alzheimer's Disease: Benefits, Risks, and Public Policy," which was published in the August 1998 issue of the Journal of Gerontological Nursing. This Award has been established by SLACK Incorporated, publisher of the Journal, in recognition of the contribution of Edna M. Stilwell, PhD, RN, C as Editor of the Journal from 1 974 to 1 997. The purpose of the Award is to continue Stilwell's tradition of mentoring and recognizing authors in the field of gerontological nursing.

Kathleen C. Buckwalter, RN, PhD, FAAN presented Schutte with a plaque, a $500 cash prize, and a bouquet of flowers from Stilweil at the Annual Board Meeting which was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Monday, November 23.
All authors published in the Journal are eligible for this Award for the best paper published each year. Entrants do not submit manuscripts for the Award; they are nominated by Board Members and Review Panel Members during blind review and selected by a committee. All manuscripts submitted from September 1998 through September 1999 are eligible for the 1999 Award to be presented at the Gerontological Society of America Meeting in San Francisco, California in November.
