Abstract

Educational Video on Pressure Ulcer Prevention Developed

Smith & Nephew United has expanded its Options educational program with a new video that discusses the high incidence of pressure ulcers in long-term care facilities and how the serious skin problem can be treated.

The 12-minute video, which highlights two recent nursing home studies, provides extensive background on Smith & Nephew's new pressure ulcer prevention program for hospitals, nursing homes and home health organizations.

The video details how the company's program has helped two nursing facilities, in particular, enhance the well-being of their patients, reduce the pressure ulcer rate, reduce cost and improve patient care.

One home in South Florida, for example, reduced its pressure ulcer rate from 24% to less than 1%, which represents a savings of $240,000. Another in Atlanta had a 28% rate decrease to less than 4%. Nurses from the homes are interviewed in the video and state that the protocol not only helped reduce skin breakdown, but also improved clinical outcome.

Dual function Tank Provides Enhanced Patient Comfort

Arjo's Sidekick is a dual function tank that provides the industry's widest range height adjustment for treating hands, wrists, arms or legs. It is ideal for patients in wheelchairs, or at bedside.

With a touch of a button, staff can easily raise the Sidekick to 37.5 inches for arm treatments or lower it to 19.5 inches from the floor for leg treatments. This 18inch span provides an enhanced level of patient treatment and comfort. Manual hydraulic and battery powered lift options are available.

Dual tank design allows patients to treat one leg while resting the other comfortably in the dry compartment at the same height and position, minimizing stress and fatigue. Because each fiberglass tank is isolated from the other and independently operated, different treatment regimens can occur simultaneously without risk of cross-contamination.

The unit's whirlpool design uses an air-enhanced water jet to eliminate the physical trauma that can occur with traditional high-force, centrifugal water pump delivery systems. This design prevents damage or pump seal failure if the whirlpool is inadvertently run dry for an extended time.

The Sidekick's chassis design offers complete access to patients requiring leg or arm treatments from a wheelchair, and is patient-accessible on three sides. Even filled, the Sidekick maneuvers easily on completely sealed, low friction ball bearing casters.

For incontinent patients, particularly elderly ones, the natural skin barrier is weakened by the harmful chemicals and enzymes found in urine and feces. Hygea SkinGuard addresses this problem by providing protection from moisture and harmful enzymes and protection of healthy skin.

Both tanks can be drained or disinfected independently or simultaneously. The Sidekick's advanced pump-out system is easier to clean and disinfect than traditional whirlpool impeller systems, removing all water from the pump motor for effective cleaning with just one ounce of disinfectant.

New Series of All-Purpose Chairs Introduced

Hausted has introduced its new innovative all-purpose chair which can be used to treat, transfer or transport patients.

The versatility of the chair minimizes patient handling and patient transfers which reduces the risk of staff injury and provides a psychological benefit to patients by allowing them to stay on the same comfortable surface during their entire treatment. For maximum flexibility, the chair adjusts from sitting to supine in seconds and even has a modified Trendelenburg position. The pneumatic-assist back and leg rests may be adjusted simultaneously or independently with one hand. Foot pedals are located on both sides of the chair for hydraulic height adjustment from 22 inches to 30 inches with the chair in any configuration.

The all-purpose chair has a convenient height-adjustable foot rest that flips down when needed or stores neatly away. Threeinch padded vinyl cushions have lumbar support and are durable and easy to clean. The seat section has a five-degree tilt to enhance comfort and prevent the patient from sliding. Hinged side rail/arm rests tuck under the chair to allow for easy patient transfer and complete access to the patient. The padded side rail/ arm rests provide increased patient protection and comfort. The four-wheel brake and steer caster system is operable from both sides of the chair and includes fiveinch self -lubricating double casters for excellent mobility of any floor surface.
