Abstract

Caring for Peonie with Alzheimer's Disease: A Training Manual tor Direct Care Providers Gayle Andresen; Baltimore: Health Professions Press; 1 995; 1 89 pages; softcover

This slim volume is the result of a joint project to provide 60 rural health care faculties in North and South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, and Montana with a training manual to teach all staff levels in any setting about caring for persons with Alzheimer's disease. The project succeeds admirably. There is no excuse now for not having a comprehensive, realistic, and easily used resource to train staff, both before they work with Alzheimer's patients and during their caregiving efforts.

The book provides help to the trainer by including ideas for readings and videotapes. Suggestions for experimental exercises are included, as are pages of "masters" to be used for making transparencies. Even quizzes are found at the end of each chapter.

Content, prefaced with attainable behavioral objectives, is presented in an easily understood style. Terms are defined. From a trainer standpoint, certain facts need to be specifically referenced, even though there is a nice reading list at the end of the book.

Some of the topics discussed are: overview of dementia, communication, managing personal care and nutrition, managing difficult behaviors, and supporting caregivers - families and staff. The topics are presented in a very sensitive way, with excellent interventions suggested for providing care.

Whether the caregiver is a spouse at home or a professor in an academic setting, this manual is a welcome addition to the training efforts to ensure the highest quality of care for the victims of Alzheimer's disease.…
