Art Increases Awareness of Elderly

Abstract

An exhibition of contemporary painting, sculpture, photography, film, video, performance, and writing at the Jamestown, New York, Community College Forum Gallery probed feelings about aging and the elderly.

"The exhibition will likely make some people more aware of the situation of the elderly," said Curator Dan R. TaIley. "In the process, it will trigger reflection on their own relative positions in the process of growing older and, inevitably, it will stir some of them to speculate on the very nature of their existence."

Although the exhibition focused on the attitudes toward aging, it did not concentrate solely on the physical aging process; it also explored how the process is measured and conceptualized. Several artists used their own aging as the subject of their work, adding an autobiographical view.
