Abstract

Adjustable Stocking Solves Fitting Problems

Anti-embolism stockings have long been a necessary precaution against pulmonary embolism for many surgery patients. However, it can be difficult to fit patients with extra-large thighs, abnormally-shaped legs, those with excessive bandages after surgery, or when edema is present.

The Carolon Company, a knitter and weaver of compression fabrics for the health-care industry, has developed a specialized anti-embolism stocking for these patients.

Originally invented for postoperative total hip patients who typically have a great deal of bandaging and edema, the adjustable thigh stocking has many advantages, including a full foot, inspection toe, floating heel, specially designed knee, natural rubber thigh band, and graduated compression.

A complete I ineof anti-embolism stockings are available, including a specialized rehabilitation stocking for patients with leg atrophy or extra-small legs. All use an exclusive fabric system for applying graduated pressure to promote continual maintenance of the circulatory system.

Complete Skin Care System Available

From patient rooms and patient baths to the employee handwash stations and the food preparation area, there are several different handwashing needs in a nursing home.

Sani-Fresh International, a unit of Scott Paper Company, has developed the ProCare hand care system, a complete array of products to address, among others, these various handwashing and skin care needs in a nursing home facility.

For use at nursing stations, SpectraCare health-care personnel handwash offers effective protection against a wide range of microorganisms to help prevent the spread of infection. A unique blend of natural soap, surfactants, and 1% chloroxylenol, gives a rich, thick, concentrated lather, leaving hands smooth and encouraging health-care personnel to wash their hands.

Also included in the ProCare system is Ultra-Kind Gentle Wash multi-purpose hand wash, an extra mild, all-purpose cleanser enriched with emollients that leave skin soft and smooth. Ultra-Kind is an ideal cleanser for both patient rooms and employee wash stations.

The ProCare 800 mL dispensing system is convenient to use and is also cost effective. A new pump is part of every refill cartridge, and is guaranteed never to leak or clog, so waste is virtually eliminated. Each cartridge takes as little as 1 0 seconds to replace and is hermetically sealed to discourage the breeding of germs that is possible with reservoir-type soap dispensers and bar soap.

fall Prevention Patient Monitor Developed

The RSVP Patient Monitoring System provides a time-saving aid to nurses for preventing falls and other patient injuries. RSVP interfaces with all standard nurse call systems to provide a signal when a patient may be leaving his bed unassisted.

The RSVP, which uses a wireless acoustic signaling technique, is powered by standard 9-volt batteries with more than a 1 year battery life. The key to the effectiveness of the RSVP product is in its patented, very thin, and highly flexible contact sensor that is placed under a patient's bed linens to detect their movement or absence. A variety of these sensors, both disposable and permanent, are available to suit different patient conditions. The RSVP is available from distributors nationally.

Gel Flotation Mattress Treats Decubitus Ulcers

Jefferson Industries, Ine, introduced the Stop-Leak Gel Flotation Mattress, which provides the benefits of flotation support and pressure distribution without the risk of messy leaks. The mattress can be the treatment of choice in more than 80% of decubitus ulcer cases as well as a key to a total preventive program.

The flotation mattress functions like an extra protective layer of fat, which helps reduce and distribute pressure over the patient's bony prominences while it supports the body evenly over a greater surface area. The mattress is also lightweight so that it can be installed on top of any hospital bed mattress.

The mattress is made from an exclusive formulation of vinyl and nylon that was specially developed to prevent small repairable punctures from becoming large holes. If the mattress is ever punctured, the stop-leak gel does not pour out like water. A tiny, visible bead of gel forms at the point of puncture and restricts further flow from the mattress. Since there is no mess, a permanent repair can be made instantly with the repair kit included with each mattress.
