Therapeutic Separation Device
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted approval for marketing of the Therapore brand primary system, a membrane separation device for therapeutic apheresis.
An emerging medical field, apheresis has been used to treat more than 75 acute and chronic diseases. Patients with diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus and hypercholesterolemia benefit when their plasma containing the disease factor is removed and replaced with albumin.
The Therapore primary system, developed jointly by Sarns/3M and MiIlipore Corporation, combines sophisticated microprocessor control with innovative membrane separation technology to remove cell-free plasma from whole blood safely and effectively.
The FDA panel that voted unanimously to approve the apheresis system commented favorably on its lack of complement activation. According to the manufacturer, the biocompatible system also guards against platelet acti vation and hemolysis.
In addition to automated controls, the Therapore primary system features an easy-to-read display panel, a portable pump console that weighs less than 70 pounds, and a color-coded tube set with the membrane separation module developed by Millipore.
The Therapore primary system has been designed to be versatile for both current protocols and future apheresis advances, a Sarns/3M representative told the FDA panel. Planned developments include a secondary separation system designed to remove specific proteins, such as the separation of lowdensity lipoproteins (LDL) from highdensity lipoproteins (HDL).

Home Care Pill Box
Borin-Halbich Ine introduces a new Home Care Pill Box, a compartmentalized dispenser that is designed to simplify and improve the accuracy of unsupervised medication dispensing in the home.
Each Home Care Pill Box consists of seven large see-through compartments with separate lids. Each compartment lid is marked with a number (1 through 7) and a letter indicating the day of the week (SMTWTFS).
Unsupervised patients in the home may use the Home Care Pill Box to ensure that the proper medication is taken at the correct time. Where multiple doses are required. Home Care Pill Boxes are easily snapped together to create a single unit capable of holding several different types of medications taken at different times during the day.

Crutch, Walker, and Cane Product
The Futuro Company has developed a special high-durability tubing for its walker, crutch, and cane product Vines constructed with the same architectural grade bronze anodize finish used in the building industry.
According to Michael Molloy, marketing manager of the company's Home Health Care Products Division, "All the major safety and convenience features that are exclusive to the Futuro aluminum walkers, crutches, and canes have been incorporated in the new models. The innovative bronze 'hard-coat' anodized finish on the tubing means extended durability and stability along with longer usage life and fade-resistant colors."
The walker weighs only 5.2 lb and folds to a compact 4Vi in for easy storage and travel. Spring loaded, selflocking release levers on the walker allow for easy opening and folding, and the steel reinforced tips are nonmarring and slip resistant. The walker's front "H" frame contains a folding mechanism made of welded steel tubing and is powder-coated in a complementary color for durability and easy care. Slipresistant vinyl handgrips also come in a complementary color.
Futuro's bronze crutch comes equipped with its patented "Super Grip" tips featuring metal inserts to prevent penetration through the tip. Among the other exclusive Futuro1 safety features on the crutch are preshaped uprights to prevent them from springing apart whenever bolts are removed for adjustment; handholds shaped to wrap around the uprights to resist rotation for added security; and height adjustments (ranging approximately from 5 ft 4 in to 6 ft 4 in) precisely drilled in 1-in increments.
The new bronze telescopic cane comes with an orthopedic handle, a feature also available in the aluminum models. "This handle provides a better hand-grip in a more natural manner," Mr Molloy explains. "The line of support is directly down the cane shaft for ideal stability."
The cane's height can be easily adjusted in 1-in increments by means of à positive spring lock button. Its quality bronze anodized aluminum silencer eliminates all rattles and vibrations, and it comes equipped with a durable slip-resistant tip with metal insert to prevent the shaft from penetrating .through the tip. A resilient tip on the cane handle provides a slip-resistant means of hanging the cane from a table or counter when not in use.

The Waffle Mattress™, a new product developed and manufactured in Indiana by two healthcare professionals, aids in the prevention and management of pressure-related discomforts such as decubitus ulcers. This mattress offers pressure control that rivals that of the air floatation beds, but at a price that makes its use as a prophylactic measure possible.
The Waffle Mattress promotes air circulation through its 65 individual holes that line up five across in 13 rows, so all areas of the body can breathe. The same holes that promote air circulatin allow moisture to flow down and away from the patient. This feature is especially important with the incontinent patient or where there is wound drainage. The unique "through-and-through hole" design of the Waffle Mattress combined with its vinyl construction means moisture is repelled immediately, helping to eliminate the potential of contamination.
The most important step in preventing pressure sores is the relief of localized pressure. The Waffle Mattress keeps pressure points well below 35 mmHg (which is capilliary closing pressure) by allowing patients to sleep on a foundation of air. Three systems combine to make the Waffle Mattress work - air displacement, air compression, and the ability of the mattress to conform to individual body shapes and sizes. Regardless of a patient's body size, this mattress adapts to accommodate the patient.
Other features of the Waffle Mattress include ease of inflation, specially formulated vinyl with flame retardant added, rapid deflation valve in case of cardiac arrest, and light weight. The mattress folds into an 8 in x 11 in rectangle and packs in any small suitcase. In addition, the Waffle Mattress is simple to maintain. There is no need for lengthy sterilization procedures such as gas or autoclave. It can be sanitized with any antimicrobial disinfectant or cleanser.

Bed Sheet Stays
Perfect Catch®, a set of four fishshaped bed sheet stays, can prevent flat sheets, even satin ones, from pulling loose.
Perfect Catch Bed Sheet Stays remove the need for aggravating fitted sheets that don't fit. They save valuable time in the morning by eliminating the need to re-do the corners when making the bed. Even the most active sleepers will wake up to a neat bed.
A sheet corner pokes through the "eye" of the fish and then slips down through the "gill," a vertical slot behind the eye. Then, when the fish is tucked between the mattress and box spring, the mattress and body weight keep the sheet from pulling free.
