NEW YORK — Kevin A. Ault, MD, OB/GYN and professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Kansas Medical Center, presented an overview of his talk on maternal immunization at the Infectious Diseases in Children Symposium.

Ault emphasized the importance of two specific vaccines in pregnancy — the influenza vaccine and the Tdap booster, which can “protect newborns from the ravages of pertussis” — and discussed efforts to develop a vaccine against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

“There’s a pretty long list of other things we could have a vaccine for — group B streptococcus, cytomegalovirus, hepatitis E — and so it’s certainly a wonderful area to be interested in and there’s a lot going on to talk about,” he said. – by Eamon Dreisbach

Disclosure: Ault reports working on the data and safety monitoring board for ACI Clinical's phase 3 RSV trial.
