VIDEO: Length of stay decreases with use of adult spine deformity surgery care pathway
SAN DIEGO — In this video from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting, Han Jo Kim, MD, FAAOS, details five steps of a critical care pathway that positively impacted patients who underwent adult spine deformity surgery.
In a study presented at the meeting, Kim and his colleagues at Hospital for Special Surgery studied 40 patients undergoing adult deformity correction surgery at five or more spine levels and followed them up to 90 days after discharge. Patient care provided through the pathway, which included a multidisciplinary team that involved anesthesiology, hospital medicine and physical therapy, was designed to achieve goals that were previously associated with decreased length of stay, such as low estimated blood loss and early mobilization.
“When we utilized and changed all five elements of these pathways, we were able to result in a decrease in our length of stay by about 38%; 95% of our patients were being discharged to home as opposed to rehab, whereas before it was closer to around 65%,” Kim said.
