In the past 4 years, each of our annual congresses featured a specific main theme that was reflected in our scientific program and was used to guide presenters’ concluding remarks in all planned sessions.

For our upcoming 19th EFORT Congress the topic Innovation and New Technologies has been chosen as the main theme because it will help highlight a broad palette of prominent topics: new techniques in diagnostics and tissue regeneration; advanced technologies in biomaterials and implants; minimally invasive surgery; robotics and computer-assisted surgery; the use of 3-D printing; telemedicine; innovative rehabilitation programs; and patient-specific treatments.

Technology Barcelona Banner

The influence of new technologies applies in a general way to every aspect of our daily lives and, more specifically, engenders a rapid evolution of modern health sciences and medical practice. Indeed, innovation constantly brings more possibilities to practitioners and thus, enhances their ability to help patients. As most of the technologies currently used in the orthopedics and traumatology (O&T) field were not available until recently, the use of novel drugs and operative techniques has increased the expertise of O&T surgeons in recent years.

Physicians and experts from the medical industry often state that most of the innovative ideas in implant design originate from Europe, emphasizing EFORT’s mission to deliver high-quality education and training within its member societies. Indeed, standardization in the use of new medical technologies will no doubt strongly contribute to improve the health care systems in all European countries facing sustainability problems linked to demographic and economic challenges.

Moreover, while these new technologies are increasing the accuracy of diagnosis and the success of numerous treatments, mastering the manipulation of complicated devices brings additional challenges to the users. Favoring the use of advanced simulators and virtual learning techniques will ensure a safer and more efficient application of new methods of treatment.

Several of the scheduled sessions for the 2018 EFORT Congress put forward crucial topics linked to innovation and new technologies to fundamentally enhance the current knowledge in diverse areas:
