VIDEO: Minimally invasive OLIF performed at L3-4 for severe low back pain
In this video from Open Operating Theatre, Christoph Mehren, MD, of Schön Klinik München Harlaching, Germany, performs minimally invasive anterior oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF) in an obese patient.
Different from the anterior lumbar interbody fusion that spine surgeons commonly perform, the OLIF is an anatomical pathway through the retroperitoneal space.
The video shows how Mehren performs the procedure, including use of a small skin incision, blunt muscle-splitting, subtotal discectomy with bone grafting and intervertebral cage placement.
The video is a teaching tool surgeons can view to prepare for surgery or use as refresher on the surgical technique and indications for this surgery.
