The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as the top-ranked hospital in the country for neurology and neurosurgery for the 2016 to 2017 year.

According to a press release from the publication, the Mayo Clinic also secured the top spot on the Best Hospitals Honor Roll. U.S. News & World Reports compared about 5,000 medical centers around the country for 25 specialties, procedures and conditions. They also ranked 504 of the Best Regional Hospitals in states and metro areas.

“The No. 1 U.S. News & World Report ranking in neurology and neurosurgery reflects the integrated teamwork treatment approach to patients suffering from spine disease,” Fred Meyer, MD, chair of Neurosurgery for the Mayo Clinic enterprise, told Spine Surgery Today. “Each patient is evaluated by an expert in neurology or physical medicine and rehab with the hope that the patient’s difficulty can be treated conservatively without intervention. If these treatments prove ineffective, then the patient is referred to a neurosurgeon who specializes in the treatment of complex spine disease. Surgery only is considered when there is good probability of benefit, and minimally invasive approaches are preferred when possible. The fact that Mayo Clinic surgeons are on a fixed salary without incentivisation helps prevent unnecessary operations and procedures.”
