Retina-AI has released its Fluid-Intelligence app for Android, in addition to the previously available Apple version.

The app uses artificial intelligence to detect macular edema and subretinal fluid on OCT scans of the retina, according to a press release from Retina-AI.

The provider takes a picture of the OCT in-app, then the image is sent to the cloud, where a machine learning algorithm determines the diagnosis and generates a report in real time, Retina-AI said. The app can screen for common retinal diseases including diabetic macular edema, exudative macular degeneration and macula-off retinal detachments.

Retina-AI is sponsoring the Diagnostic mobile Artificial intelligence Technology for detecting fluid Underneath and Inside the Macula (DATUM) study. In this study, retina specialists will compare their assessments of OCTs to those of the AI app. Initial results have shown a sensitivity of 90% and a specificity of 82.5%, according to Retina-AI.

“One of Retina-AI's strengths is a unique vertical understanding of the ophthalmic space coupled with engineering expertise and delivery experience,” Stephen G. Odaibo, Retina-AI's founder, chief executive officer and chief software architect, said in the release.
