AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. — George O. Waring IV, MD, presented here clinical pearls for the Tecnis Synergy at the first live meeting presentation since the approval of the Johnson & Johnson Vision IOL in early May 2021.

Noting that he will be implanting the Tecnis Synergy, which combines features of a multifocal and extended depth of focus lens, at 8 a.m. on Monday, Waring told the audience at Cataract Surgery: Telling It Like It Is, “This is new ... ladies and gentlemen, as you look across the defocus curve what you are going to see is essentially a broad, continuous range with close to a line better of uncorrected state across the entire range. So, we have not seen this yet before in the United States to date.”

“The image quality ... is excellent, and this is something that is raising the bar ... for our discerning refractive patients,” Waring said.

Waring said surgeons should consider the A-constant.

“We recommend you starting with 119.3 or what you are used to with your Tecnis platform,” he said.

When selecting an IOL power, “aim for the closest target to plano to obviously minimize postoperative astigmatism.” Waring said that the use of autorefractors is not recommended.

Waring also noted that surgeons should refer to safety information about comorbidity risk and to manage patients’ postop expectations.
