Femtosecond-assisted side-cut LASIK produces reduction of epithelial ingrowth

Lower incidence of epithelial ingrowth occurred in patients that underwent femtosecond laser-assisted side-cut LASIK versus primary LASIK with microkeratome flaps, according to a study.

The comparative case series included 24 eyes of 18 patients for Group 1 that underwent femtosecond laser-assisted treatment with side cut only. Group 2 consisted of 103 eyes of 80 patients having retreatment using traditional flap-lift LASIK.

Epithelial ingrowth was identified in 27 total cases: four (17%) in Group 1 and 23 (22%) in Group 2. The statistically significant difference between the two groups suggests that it may be beneficial to create a side cut with a femtosecond laser versus relifting the old flap (P < .05).

Further studies will be needed to provide a better comparison between the techniques, as in a prospective study with randomization, the authors said.
