Cross-linking hinders further progression of keratoconus in majority of eyes
Corneal collagen cross-linking, or CXL, prevented further disease progression in almost all eyes with advanced keratoconus, according to a study.
The retrospective study included 28 eyes of 22 patients who underwent CXL for progressive keratoconus. All eyes had maximum keratometry (maxK) of 55 D or more. Mean postoperative follow-up was 22 months.
Further progression of keratoconus was prevented in 27 of 28 eyes. Average maxK decreased from 61.2 D preoperatively to 59.5 D at final follow-up; the decrease was statistically significant (P < .01).
The change in average corrected distance visual acuity was insignificant, according to the authors. Corrected distance visual acuity improved in 11 eyes, and three eyes lost two or more lines of corrected distance visual acuity.
Corneal thickness decreased at 3 months but increased significantly at 1 year (both P < .001).
Limitations included the small number of patients involved in the study, the authors said.
