Precursors of type 3 neovascularization indicate future development of wet AMD

Identification of early neovascularization predicted the development of lesions related to wet age-related macular degeneration, according to a study.

The prospective study included 37 eyes of 37 patients with a mean age of 78.5 years. All patients had unilateral type 3 neovascularization caused by AMD at baseline.

Fundus autofluorescence, fluorescein angiography, indocyanine green angiography and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography were used to identify precursors of type 3 neovascularization in fellow eyes without AMD for 1 year.

All uninvolved fellow eyes had hard and soft drusen, mottling of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and reticular pseudodrusen at baseline.

Twelve fellow eyes (32%) developed AMD after a mean of 19.6 months from baseline.

SD-OCT showed localized RPE elevation and overlying outer plexiform layer that adhered to the RPE.
