Aberration-optimized ablation profile improves vision in pseudophakic patients

HYDERABAD, India — An aberration-optimized LASIK procedure yielded good, stable results in pseudophakic patients implanted with monofocal IOLs, according to one surgeon.

“The procedure provides improved uncorrected near and intermediate vision, maintaining distance vision with high levels of patient satisfaction,” Robert Edward Ang, MD, said at the joint meeting of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology and All India Ophthalmological Society.

SupraCor (Technolas Perfect Vision) is an aberration-optimized presbyopic LASIK algorithm that creates a multifocal cornea.

In a prospective study, 35 pseudophakic patients underwent unilateral SupraCor LASIK treatment. Spherical error was ±2 D with up to 2 D of cylinder. Patients with poor contrast were excluded for suspected early age-related macular degeneration.

“We achieved a mean spherical equivalent of –0.46 D. Results were stable over time,” Ang said.

Intermediate vision was at least 20/25 in 95% of the patients. Near vision was 20/25 in 64% of eyes, and 20/32 was achieved monocularly in 90% of patients. About 31% of patients lost one line of distance vision.

“It is a multifocal treatment, and a little far vision has to be sacrificed,” Ang said.

Ang recommended evaluating topography, taking into account that patients have undergone a clear corneal incision procedure.

“I always check [posterior capsular opacification], and I treat it before surgery. Considering the age of the patients, I put a punctum plug in every eye that I treat and treat them aggressively for dry eye,” Ang said.
