The American Kidney Fund has set up an emergency program to provide financial assistance to low-income patients on dialysis or who have undergone kidney transplantation, a group of patients who can be seriously impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak.

According to a press release from the AKF, the Coronavirus Emergency Fund will give grants of $250 to patients who “demonstrate financial need” based upon submission of an assistance application (applications accepted from March 23, 2020). Patients can use the grant for food, transportation and medications.

“The health crisis in our country is unprecedented, and vulnerable kidney failure patients are facing enormous risks and challenges,” LaVarne A. Burton, president and CEO of AKF, said in the release. “They are losing their jobs. They have had to stop using public transit to get to their treatments, incurring costs they cannot afford. Patients with compromised immune systems need help obtaining groceries and other essentials safely. We need to do everything we can to help.”

The fund is made possible through AKF’s re-allocation of $300,000 from its existing budget, as well as through public support.

Editor’s note: On March 24, the AKF reported that due to overwhelming demand, the organization has received more applications than the currently available funding can support. Grants are being approved in the order received until the emergency fund is exhausted. Once additional funding becomes available, the AKF reported it will fulfill grant requests in the order they were submitted.
