ASN announces technology roadmap to develop new dialysis approaches

SAN DIEGO The American Society of Nephrology’s Kidney Health Initiative announced its Technology Roadmap for Innovative Approaches to Renal Replacement Therapy at ASN Kidney Week. The development of the RRT Roadmap was developed by a multidisciplinary team of experts led by Joseph V. Bonventre, MD, PhD.

“The investment in a solution [to kidney disease] is relatively minimal and the outcome for patients is unacceptable. In the U.S., $100 billion is devoted to the care chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease with about $35 billion focused on end-stage [renal disease],” Bonventre said at a press conference, here.

According to a commitment statement submitted to the White House Summit on Organ Donation, he said the Kidney Health Initiative looks to “identify the scientific, technical and regulatory milestones needed to achieve the goal of creating a bioengineered alternative to dialysis as renal replacement therapy.”

The RRT Roadmap aims to implement patient-centered imperatives to improve quality of life and increase lifespan, establish relevant design requirements to ensure standard minimum technical expectations and encourage multidisciplinary collaboration. The roadmap identifies challenges and opportunities and encourages diversity of thought and attraction of expertise from various scientific and engineering communities, Bonventre said. Additionally, a key component of the roadmap is regulatory agency involvement.

“What we want to see is a future for patients on dialysis now or future patients who reach ESRD that will be reflected in some wearable or implantable solutions that could involve cells, mechanical or chemical devices, or possibly even xenotransplantation.
