As of January 2019, there were an estimated 16.9 million cancer survivors in the U.S., representing about 5% of the population, according to the American Cancer Society.
That number is projected to grow to 22.2 million by 2030 and 26.1 million by 2040, according to the society.
The National Cancer Institute estimated that in 2020, 5.0% of new cancer cases occurred among those 15 to 39 years old, and 84.6% of adolescents and young adults diagnosed with cancer will survive for 5 years after diagnosis.
The American Cancer Society reports that 67% of survivors live 5 or more years, 45% live 50 or more years, and 18% live 20 or more years.
