The Humalog Junior KwikPen, a prefilled, rapid-acting insulin pen designed to improve glycemic control in people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, is now available for prescription in the U.S., Eli Lilly and Company announced in a press release.

The Humalog Junior KwikPen (insulin lispro 100 units/mL) is the first prefilled disposable pen to offer half-unit dosing. Additionally, the pen is lighter and shorter than other half-unit pens.

“Learning how to inject insulin can be overwhelming, especially for newly diagnosed children and their caregivers,” Sherry Martin, MD, vice president of global medical affairs at Lilly Diabetes, said in the release. “We hope to help take away some of the worries about the injection process with Humalog Junior KwikPen. Because it is prefilled, there are fewer steps for people to learn, and the half-unit increments make dosing more precise.”

The pen was approved by the FDA in September and is pending final approval in the European Union, which is expected later this year, according to the company.
