Type 2 diabetes associated with development, presence of osteoarthritis
Patients with type 2 diabetes are at increased risk for developing osteoarthritis regardless of weight or BMI, according to a recent systematic review.
“Osteoarthritis is more than just wear and tear of joints,” Sangeeta Kashyap, MD, associate professor of medicine at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and staff physician in the department of endocrinology at Cleveland Clinic, told Endocrine Today. “It is closely related to type 2 diabetes and prediabetes independent of obesity.”
In a systematic review and meta-analysis, Kashyap and Mia F. Williams, MD, MS, of the University of California, San Francisco, and colleagues analyzed 10 studies examining the association between type 2 diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance and the presence of osteoarthritis in any joint (four cohort studies; five cross-sectional studies; one case-control study; n = 16,742). Researchers included only one association per study so as not to confound data with overlapping groups from studies that reported separate associations for each analyzed joint.
Researchers found an association between type 2 diabetes and the development or presence of osteoarthritis (OR = 1.21; 95% CI, 1.02-1.41). In the subset of seven studies that controlled for weight or BMI (n = 7,156), researchers found increased odds of osteoarthritis associated with type 2 diabetes (OR = 1.25; 95% CI, 1.05-1.46) from a smaller pool of patients.
“Implementing exercise training for patients with diabetes needs to encompass how they are affected by osteoarthritis,” Kashyap said. “Further research on the effects of various antidiabetic agents that improve glycemic control and assist with weight loss on progression of osteoarthritis are needed.” – by Regina Schaffer
