BOSTON — Edward R. Damiano, PhD, professor of biomedical engineering at Boston University, discusses the ongoing outpatient studies testing automated glycemic control with a bionic pancreas.

Completed research has shown that the bionic pancreas is effective in reducing blood glucose levels in preteens, adolescents and adults living at home and in summer camp settings. Damiano added that no serious hypoglycemic events were experienced with the use of a bionic pancreas.

Damiano and colleagues are currently working on a new platform that does not require a smartphone, computer or tablet to operate. The new platform may be used in new outpatient clinical trials in the last quarter of 2016.
