New data demonstrate that recipients of blepharoplasty are rated as appearing more youthful, attractive and healthy after the procedure.

In addition, both casual observers and the patients themselves reported an increase in perceived energy level after blepharoplasty compared with individuals who did not undergo the procedure.

The researchers suggested that despite its frequent use, little research exists on how blepharoplasty changes perceptions of the face. In the current study, 401 participants rated before and after photographs of 10 women who underwent the procedure. The aim was to compare observer perceptions with those reported by patients. The analysis included data from 161 participants who completed the questionnaire, including 77 new patients; 59 patients who returned without undergoing blepharoplasty; and 25 who returned after blepharoplasty.

The web-based survey was conducted during January and February 2017, and asked observers to rate age, attractiveness, health and energy level. Each respondent only saw preoperative or postoperative photos.

Multivariate analysis results indicated that blepharoplasty recipients appeared 1.04 years younger than their preoperative counterparts (95% CI, –1.70 to –0.37 years). Post-surgery women also appeared more attractive (coefficient, 4.92; 95% CI, 3.91-5.93), healthier (coefficient, 4.33; 95% CI, 3.28-5.37) and more energetic (coefficient, 9.83; 95% CI, 8.51-11.16).

Patients who underwent blepharoplasty reported a significant increase in energy level compared with individuals who did not undergo the procedure (z = –4.528; P < .001).

“This is the first study, to date, aimed at quantifying the perceptions of facial aesthetic changes following blepharoplasty,” the researchers concluded. “Both patients and casual observers perceived a significant improvement in energy level following blepharoplasty, a meaningful finding as the appearance of fatigue is a chief concern of the patients before they undergo blepharoplasty.” – by Rob Volansky
