New uses of Botox, new injectable technology in development
MIAMI — A physician here at South Beach Symposium 2017 reviewed key injection techniques and new developments within the industry of fillers and toxins.
Botox, according to Susan H. Weinkle, MD, is a great choice for a patient new to injectables, as its results are impressive, predictable and safe, and it works well in both monotherapy and combination procedures.

There are currently numerous clinical trials evaluating what other areas Botox can treat, including hemifacial spasms, alopecia, areata, sleep bruxism, post hepatic neuralgia, scarring, psoriasis vulgaris, epicondylitis and persistent neck and shoulder pain.
It is also useful in treating migraines and reducing facial flushing and sebum production.
Within her own practice, Weinkle has found that only 23% of her patients use combination therapy, while 48% use toxins only.
“Now in my book, we have a huge potential there. We need to tap into these people and bring them onboard,” Weinkle said. As to why so many patients avoid fillers, she said, “I think the biggest fear is they’re not going to look natural.”
“[Men] have to learn to come on board, we can make them look better too,” she said, as she spoke about patient populations. “It’s just that we need to treat them as males. We don’t want to ‘Spock’ their eyebrows, we don’t want to make them feminized, we don’t want to raise their lateral eyebrows as much, but I do think we’re going to see as we go forward they’re sneaking in the back door.”
Weinkle concluded her presentation with the introduction of a new syringe technology. Developed by TSK Laboratories, the new syringe is metered so that with a click it can accurately deliver two, one or half a unit of product. – by Talitha Bennett
