Abstract

Using Photographs to Establish Shared Meaning in the Classroom

Engaging students in understanding concepts beyond their own lived experiences is a challenge for nurse educators. Student evaluations of a required theory course on family nursing revealed that students were disengaged and did not understand the concept of family. Many students commented they were “not able to stay focused on lecture content related to family” and that they “wish [they] could do something to help [them] understand other family situations better.” My goal was to find a teaching method that actively engaged students and aided their understanding of multiple perspectives of family and of self-awareness.
